Neighborhood

Malden, a hilly woodland area north of the Mystic River, was settled by Puritans in 1640 on land purchased in 1629 from the Pawtucket Indians. The area was originally called "Mistick Side"[and was a part of Charlestown. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1649.  The name Malden was selected by Joseph Hills, an early settler and landholder, and was named after Maldon England. Malden, which originally included what are now the adjacent cities of Melrose (until 1850) and Everett (until 1870), was incorporated as a city in 1882.

Malden is a suburban city in Middlesex County.   It has a total square area of 5.1 miles. The population was 56,340 at the 2000 census.  Malden recently earned the attention of Business Week as being one of the best places in the country to raise children. City government is committed to a strong educational system having invested significantly in the rebuilding of its public school system over the past several years. The community boasts some of the finest recreational facilities in the greater Boston area including new parks and playgrounds, a privately owned ice rink and an actively used boathouse for crew activities on the Malden River.  There is direct access to one of the world's busiest international airports and the City is conveniently located near highways and public transportation. Some of the country's best universities are minutes away as are many of the world's best high tech and medical research facilities. The City enjoys an active business community and has made great strides in recent years on the revitalization of its downtown area. Amidst all this activity, Malden has tenaciously preserved its neighborly and small town tradition.

The city is served by the Orange Line  subway that connects it to downtown Boston.  The city's subway stops are Malden Center and Oak Grove.  Bus service to all adjacent communities is also available via the service of the MBTA.

The City of Malden operates under the Mayor/City Council form of government. The Council is the legislative body that represents the community and is empowered by the City Charter to formulate city-wide policy. The City Council is comprised of eleven council members, eight of whom are elected by ward with the remaining three elected at-large. Under the City Charter, the Mayor is responsible for recommending policy, program and budget priorities to the City Council, which in turn approves policy direction for the City. Current tax rate – Fiscal Year 2010 - $12.39 per $1,000/Residential - $21.38 per $1,000/Commercial, Industrial Properties
